How to Wash a Pilates Reformer Towel (So the Grip Lasts)

Care & Maintenance · 4 min read

A reformer towel is mostly maintenance-free — but two common laundry habits will quietly destroy the grip. Avoid those and it'll last for years.

Quick answer Machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry low or hang dry. No fabric softener and no high heat — both wreck the rubber backing and the microfiber's absorbency.

The one thing that ruins a reformer towel

Heat and fabric softener. High dryer heat breaks down the rubber non-slip backing over time, and fabric softener leaves a waxy coating that clogs the microfiber — killing both its absorbency and its grip. Skip those two and the rest is easy.

The simple wash routine

1

Before first use

Give it one wash to remove any manufacturing residue and prime the microfiber.

2

Washing

Cold or warm water, gentle cycle, regular detergent. Wash with like colors.

3

Drying

Tumble dry low or hang dry. Avoid high heat to protect the backing.

Do & don't

Do

  • Wash before first use
  • Use cold or warm water
  • Tumble low or hang dry
  • Wash every few sessions

Don't

  • Use fabric softener
  • Use bleach
  • Iron or high-heat the backing
  • Dry clean

How often should you wash it?

Every two or three sessions is a good rhythm — sooner if it's seen heavy sweat. Washing isn't just about freshness: sweat and body oils build up on the rubber and gradually reduce traction.

If the grip feels weaker Don't assume the towel is worn out — wash it first. Oils and sweat coating the backing are usually the culprit, and a cold wash with a low-heat dry typically brings the grip right back.
