What to Bring to Your First Reformer Pilates Class
Beginner's guide · 4 min read
Your first reformer class is exciting — and a little intimidating. Show up with the right kit and you can just focus on the workout.
Quick answer
Bring grip socks, a non-slip reformer towel, water, and fitted clothing. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to meet your instructor and get set up on the machine.
The essentials
- Grip socks. Most studios require them — they keep your feet planted on the footbar and platform. Many studios sell them at the front desk if you forget.
- A non-slip reformer towel. Keeps you anchored on the carriage, wicks sweat, and gives you a clean, hygienic surface.
- A water bottle. Reformer work is harder than it looks — you'll want it.
- Fitted workout clothes. Leggings and a fitted top. Avoid loose layers, drawstrings, or zippers that can catch in the springs and straps.
- A hair tie. You'll be lying down and moving through a full range of motion.
What to wear (and skip)
Go for snug, stretchy clothing you can move in. Skip baggy shirts (they'll fall over your face when you're lying back), heavy jewellery, and strong lotions or oils before class — they make your skin and the carriage slippery.
First-class tip
Tell your instructor it's your first time. They'll set your springs, footbar, and straps for you and keep an eye on your form — that's exactly what they're there for.
