Why You Keep Slipping on the Reformer (and How to Stop)
Sliding around on the carriage isn't a sign you're doing it wrong — it's a friction problem. Once you understand what's causing it, the fix is simple.
What's actually happening
A reformer carriage is upholstered in smooth, wipeable vinyl — great for hygiene, terrible for traction. The moment a film of sweat builds up, friction drops and your hands, feet, and back start to travel. It's worst exactly when you're working hardest: footwork, planks, and jumpboard all load the carriage while you're sweating.
The usual culprits
| Culprit | Why it makes you slide |
|---|---|
| Sweat on vinyl | A thin water film kills friction on the smooth surface |
| Lotion or body oil | Coats your skin and makes any surface slick |
| Regular socks | Cotton slides on vinyl and gives no grip on the footbar |
| A bare carriage | Smooth upholstery has almost nothing to hold onto |
How to actually fix it
Lay down a towel
A non-slip reformer towel grips the carriage and soaks up sweat — the single biggest fix.
Wear grip socks
Silicone dots keep your feet planted on the footbar and platform where a towel can't reach.
Prep skin & surface
Skip heavy lotion before class, and wipe the carriage down before you start.
