Why You Keep Slipping on the Reformer (and How to Stop)

Grip & Technique · 4 min read

Sliding around on the carriage isn't a sign you're doing it wrong — it's a friction problem. Once you understand what's causing it, the fix is simple.

Quick answer You slip because sweat on a smooth vinyl carriage leaves almost nothing to grip. The fix is to add a grippy, absorbent layer between you and the upholstery — a non-slip reformer towel — and grip socks for your feet.

What's actually happening

A reformer carriage is upholstered in smooth, wipeable vinyl — great for hygiene, terrible for traction. The moment a film of sweat builds up, friction drops and your hands, feet, and back start to travel. It's worst exactly when you're working hardest: footwork, planks, and jumpboard all load the carriage while you're sweating.

The usual culprits

Culprit Why it makes you slide
Sweat on vinyl A thin water film kills friction on the smooth surface
Lotion or body oil Coats your skin and makes any surface slick
Regular socks Cotton slides on vinyl and gives no grip on the footbar
A bare carriage Smooth upholstery has almost nothing to hold onto

How to actually fix it

1

Lay down a towel

A non-slip reformer towel grips the carriage and soaks up sweat — the single biggest fix.

2

Wear grip socks

Silicone dots keep your feet planted on the footbar and platform where a towel can't reach.

3

Prep skin & surface

Skip heavy lotion before class, and wipe the carriage down before you start.

Why the towel works It does double duty: the microfiber top wicks away the sweat that causes slipping in the first place, while the rubber backing stops the towel itself from sliding. You're not masking the problem — you're removing it.
